Three leading experts discuss Europe’s most pressing dilemma: how to remain competitive in an era where power increasingly trumps democratic values. Moderated by author Andrew Keen, this DLD26 expert panel brings together Keri Grieman (University of Oxford), Marta Mucznik (International Crisis Group) and Keegan McBride (Tony Blair Institute for Global Change).
“Europe finds itself in perhaps one of the most tense and dangerous geopolitical situations it’s been in for quite some time”, McBride observes, and the continent needs technological strength, strategic power, and faster experimentation to deal with a harsher geopolitical climate.
Europe’s rules often tell companies “what you’re running from”, Keri Grieman notes, rather than “where to run to” – which makes it very difficult to “establish how can we build, how can we innovate.”
Mucznik links competitiveness to security, warning that “the EU was built for peaceful times” and now “has to learn to speak the language of power” in order to survive among “great global powers that seem to disregard rules and international law.”
