Industries, particularly energy-intensive ones like steel and chemical production, contribute significantly to global emissions and the climate crisis. This DLD24 session, moderated by Christiaan Hetzner (Fortune) brings together experts from science and business to discuss the best solutions for making industry production carbon neutral.
The panelists are Anne-Laure de Chammard (Siemens Energy); Anne-Marie Großmann (GMH Group); Prof. Michael Sterner (OTH Regensburg); Christian Hartel (Wacker Chemie AG).
“How can we solve the climate issue?”, Sterner asks. “You have to look at the sectors: where do the emissions come from?” In most industrialized nations, he points out, “90% of the emissions come from the use of energy in electricity, heating and buildings, manufacturing, industry and cars”.
The good news is that “the world will shift towards 100% renewables, because wind and solar are the cheapest sources we have”, Sterner argues.
Industry production accounts for 30% of global CO2 emissions, Anne-Laure de Chammard observes. “So we cannot talk about becoming energy neutral or combating climate change without tackling the industry.”
There are different ways to do that, she says, and “all the technologies are there.”
