Nightlife is about more than just clubs, as you’ll hear in this DLD26 conversation between VibeLab co-founder Lutz Leichsenring and Clemens Baumgärtner, mayoral candidate in Munich for the conservative party CSU.
What makes nightlife special is that it runs from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., mixing culture, food, retail, transit, and safety, Lutz Leichsenring explains, and it shapes how people connect and why talent stays. Many cities start to have “nighttime governance”, he notes, and they realize that there’s both economic and social value to nightlife.
Leichsenring points to Berlin’s efforts to fight club displacement and practical tools like a soundproofing fund for small venues. Other cities adjust rules so one complaint does not automatically shut a place down.
Clemens Baumgärtner recalls the wild energy in 1990s Munich around neighborhoods like Werksviertel, and he wants more of that again. He calls for balance with neighbors, better data, similar to what the city already gathers for Oktoberfest, and smarter tech for noise and safety.
