Every once in a while, we come across scientists and founders who work on utterly mind-blowing new technologies. In this DLD 23 Session, Andy Kitchen, CEO of biotechnology startup Cortical Labs, explains how his company is growing brain cells in a lab – and can program them like a computer.
The “Dish Brain” – as the developers call their prototype computer chip containing live brain cells – is already able to play the legendary computer game Pong.
To achieve this, neural tissue is grown directly on an interface of thousands of microscopic electrodes. The biological
neural network inside the chip can fluidly sense and act within a simulated world the engineers crafted for it.
