Advances in AI and image recognition mean that robots that can now identify discarded items and greatly enhance the automation of recycling, as Greg Ameyugo shows in his highly engaging DLD Circular talk.
Ameyugo starts his talk with the observation that “the other day, ChatGPT tried to get me to recycle a baby”.
As the Head of AI and Interactive Systems at CEA, Ameyugo was simply running an experiment to see how humans and machines could collaborate in sorting out discarded products for waste management – and the AI found it difficult to tell the difference between a human baby and a plastic doll.
“It had no trouble with the broken smartphone”, Ameyugo recalls. But the doll, with its human features, was a different matter.
