Verena Pausder, Chairwoman of the German Startup Association, and Ann-Kristin Achleitner (TUM) challenge the narrative of Europe’s decline, arguing that the continent possesses world-class deep tech companies and research, but struggles to translate these assets into global leadership.
Their DLD25 conversation highlights examples like Proxima Fusion, Marvel Fusion, ESA Aerospace, and Plancq, which showcase the potential of deep-tech companies within Germany and Europe.
“This is world class”, Pausder says. “This is our world class research and development coming out of our universities.”
Achleitner also sees many “gold nuggets in the ground” but acknowledges that it’s often a challenge to translate research into successful startups. “The complexities of doing so are not discussed in depth and have to be understood”, she says.
These challenges include a lack of collaboration between universities, startups, and established industries, as well as insufficient long-term funding.
Watch the video for further insights into potential solutions to these challenges; how the state can act as an early customer, rather than just a regulator; and why Europe needs larger growth funds to stay competitive in frontier technologies.
