When plastic became popular in the 1950s and 60s it seemed like a revolutionary material. Cheap, lightweight, flexible – and extremely durable.
Today, plastic pollution is an ever-growing problem that needs every smart solution we can think of. Meet Joel Tasche, Founder and CEO of CleanHub, a startup from Berlin that is on a mission to keep plastic out of the oceans.
“The question is why is waste valuable or invaluable?”, Tasche asks. For plastics, the answer is clear, as he explains: More than 90% of plastic waste is currently not recycled – partly for technical reasons but also because “virgin material, the original material, is cheaper than materials made from waste.”
Tasche goes on to present a number of different solutions, such as designing products for a circular economy, scaling the process of recycling and the need for innovation.
