The blurring boundaries between digital avatars, physical spaces, and the fragmented nature of modern media consumption lie at the heart of this DLD26 conversation between Hans Ulrich Obrist (Serpentine Galleries) and German music producer, graphic designer, and DJ Emir Timur Tokdemir, better known as Mechatok.
Together, they explore Mechatok’s journey from classical guitar training in Munich to becoming a global producer and digital nomad. “In the realm of making my own music, it was always electronic music”, Mechatok recalls, “and that would always happen on online forums or pages such as SoundCloud.”
Today, Mechatok creates music that is heavily influenced by Internet overstimulation. He likens his new album’s sound to the experience of quickly scrolling through Instagram videos, deliberately incorporating sudden stops, starts, and vocal stutters to poetically capture that fragmented digital stress.
