As the number of violent conflicts worldwide increases, there’s also greater need to treat war traumas. This DLD24 expert panel discussion shines a light on the role of psychedelics in treating the emotional scars that victims suffer from, often for decades.
Moderated by Anne Philippi (The New Health Club), the panel brings together Dr. Rachel Yehuda (Mount Sinai Health Systems), Yuriy Blokhin (Homecoming) and Leor Roseman (University of Exeter).
Rachel Yehuda emphasizes the importance of conducting proper clinical trials and having a trained therapists help process the material that comes up during a psychedelic experience.
“A lot of people think that you can just have an experience individually or in a group, and then you’ll be healed from your traumas”, Yehuda says. But that’s a myth, she warns. “What happens is that you feel yourself opening up, and you begin to unearth a lot of things that you know that you have kept buried.”
Yuriy Blokhin shares experiences from working with war veteran communities in the U.S., Canada, and Ukraine, helping them access psychedelic options for PTSD treatments.
Leo Roseman has studied peace building with the help of psychedelics. He shares insights from an experiment that brought Israelis and Palestinians together in shared psychedelic rituals. His research suggests that these experiences have the potential to challenge narratives, process collective traumas together and build new communities.
