The principles of the circular economy hold a profound, transformative power for healthcare, as they could shift the focus from reactive treatment to proactive prevention and well-being, Julien Venne, founder of Malsama Mind, argues in his compelling DLD Future Hub presentation.
“Life is circular in itself”, with metabolism, liver regeneration and kidneys that “filter, reuse, transform and re‑inject” materials, Venne observes. Healthcare should emulate this model, he argues, as these biological cycles offer a template for systems that preserve resources and health at the same time.
Venne contrasts this natural efficiency with a healthcare system where specialists look at a “fragmented reality of the human body”, which leads to increased costs and often lower patient satisfaction, he says.
Today’s system, which has grown over decades, is ill-equipped to handle modern challenges like an aging population, chronic diseases, and the growing mental health crisis, Venne argues. “We treat healthcare most of the time as a burden”, he says. “I prefer to see it as an investment.”
