Aleph Alpha founder Jonas Andrulis discusses the importance of artificial intelligence for the German economy and its potential impact on various industries.
Andrulis sees a big risk that Europe will fall behind the U.S. and China – resulting in a geopolitical dependence on vital technology.
“It is our responsibility to make sure that the world our children will grow up in is according to our values and is a world we understand and can shape”, he says. “This is not just about AI. This is an industrial revolution.”
Since 2008, the U.S. economy has become twice the size of the European economy, Andrulis notes. He argues that aging societies will increasingly have to rely on AI tools to make their shrinking workforce more efficient.
In Germany, the public sector already to struggles to fill some 400,000 open positions, Andrulis says – and as further public servants retire, “we lose their workforce, but we also lose their experience, we lose their knowledge.”
AI can help with digitalization, not just by replacing outdated technology, but by aiding in complex tasks, Andrulis suggests. He points to a system named F13 as an example of generative AI helping administrators in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
To be useful, though, the information given “has to be correct”, Andrulis emphasizes. “And that has to be so transparent that the human expert can take responsibility for the outcome.”
