How can Europe’s energy landscape be transformed to achieve a sustainable, green future through innovation, digitalization, and cross-continental collaboration? Watch this fascinating DLD25 conversation between Victoria Ossadnik (E.ON) and Fabienne Serfaty (Xlinks) for expert insights.
Victoria Ossadnik highlights the importance of energy stability, noting that the challenge now lies in transitioning toward green energy while maintaining reliability and affordability.
This transformation is not just about green generation but requires a complete overhaul of the energy system, she emphasizes. Ultimately, consumers will “change from being somebody who puts a light bulb in, and is paying per light bulb each year, towards somebody who’s storing energy, generating energy and using energy.”
Fabienne Serfaty describes Xlinks’ groundbreaking clean energy project – a subsea cable in the Atlantic Ocean that will transmit solar and wind energy generated in Morocco to the UK. At 4,000 kilometers, it will be the “largest interconnector project in the world,” capable of supplying 8% of the UK’s energy needs, Serfaty notes.
“The area we’re covering for the wind turbines and the solar panels is about 4,000 square kilometers”, she says. “The conditions in the desert are phenomenal. We have 12 hours of pretty constant sun every day.” The project will also bring significant economic benefits such as job creation and industrial development.
At $25 billion, the project requires significant capital – but “the energy transition is not going to happen with incremental investments of 100 million each”, Serfaty says. “Our message is clear: Think big!”
