The promise of AI in education lies not in replacing teachers or automating learning, but in fostering human agency, critical thinking, and genuine understanding, this DLD Future Hub panel makes clear. Moderated by Sten Saluveer (Tallinn Digital Summit), the session brings together Ronit Levavi-Morad (Google Research), Alex Kotran (aiEDU), and Alexander Pretschner (TU Munich).
Knowing how to use AI tools is “necessary but insufficient”, Alex Kotran argues. “What really matters is, how do we empower kids to really bring the human advantage to the table?” For that to happen, schools must prepare students for a world in whicch “every industry, every business, and every aspect of our lives is integrating AI”, he argues.
Alexander Pretschner observes that while “every student is using GenAI”, they’re primarily using it for homework assistance –which threatens the fundamental purpose of education: developing an understanding of the matter at hand. “The very point about homework is that it is hard”, he says.
Ronit Levavi-Morad emphasizes the urgency of addressing the “AI literacy gap.” The transformation of society and work is huge, she argues, “and we need to act now!” She highlights Google’s mission to co-create AI tools with educators, students, and scientists, ensuring they are rooted in pedagogy and ethical principles. AI, she insists, is here to stay.
