Achieving a truly circular economy demands more than just technological innovation; it requires a profound “inner shift” in mindset, leadership, and collective action. This is the core argument presented by investor Alessa Berg (Top Tier Impact) and strategic advisor Birgit Berthold-Kremser in their compelling DLD Future Hub session.
“The future knocks, but we lock the door – prisoners of an old paradigm, afraid to trust, clinging to short-lived gains that will turn to dust”, Alessa Berg says, as she opens the session in the style of a poem.
Nature itself operates on circular principles, she notes, where “waste doesn’t exist; it’s just resources missing from your list.”
Birgit Berthold-Kremser echoes these sentiments, arguing that true circularity requires “bold action, bold leadership.” A major obstacle is the “ostrich effect”, she says, where people bury their heads in the sand, hoping problems will disappear.
To overcome this, individuals and organizations must recognize that circularity is “more than a trend”, she demands. “It’s an inner transformation and you really have to stand up because it’s a paradigm shift.”
