As Maria Furtwängler (MaLisa Foundation) and Eckart von Hirschhausen (Foundation Healthy Planet, Healthy People) welcome back the audience to day 2 of DLD Munich 2025, they discuss the urgent need to address biodiversity loss and climate change – and see both as part of the same challenge.
Reflecting on the success of the recent DLD Nature conference, they emphasize the importance of integrating environmental issues into the broader conversation.
“Climate change is going to decide how we’re going to live in the future”, Maria Furtwängler says. “But biodiversity loss definitely is going to decide whether we’re going to live on this planet.”
Eckard von Hirschhausen – a physician, comedian and popular German television personality – likens humanity’s inaction on climate change to ignoring a full bladder in the middle of the night. “You’re lying in your bed, and you know exactly what you have to do. And you know exactly that it’s not going to change for the better if you don’t do anything. But we close our eyes and think, ‘Oh, well, maybe the problem goes away.’”

This conversation sets the stage for a day of thought-provoking discussions about the intersection of technology, nature, and humanity.
