Transformation scholar and bestselling author Maja Göpel emphasizes the need to adopt system thinking to address the complex challenges facing society, particularly in policymaking and business practices with regard to nature conservation.
“How did we ever get to the idea that we’re separate from nature?”, Göpel asks.
The answer, she suggests, lies in an economic system that does not properly reflect the value of nature for human existence. “The real value and the monetary value are not really aligned right now.”
Göpel emphasized that transformative change requires updating our mental models, overcoming outdated systems – so-called “system traps” – and leveraging our collective potential to shape a sustainable future.
“Nature can’t claim political space for itself”, Göpel says. “It needs advocates because it’s silent, often invisible.”
