German philosopher and bestselling author Markus Gabriel (University of Bonn) presents his vision for a new ethical framework for artificial intelligence.
After a brief introduction by publicist René Scheu, Gabriel argues that AI systems can be designed to have a positive impact on society if their goal is to further moral progress.
He contrasts this with military drones and other autonomous weapons systems used in war. “Ethics of AI deals with moral facts pertaining to the production and use of AI systems”, Gabriel says.
While AI may not truly be intelligent like humans, implementing AI systems disrupts society so their development needs normative guidance.
Ultimately he remains optimistic that, if implemented in ethical ways, artificial intelligence can advance humankind.
“The most effective way of social implementation is through the economy”, Gabriel argues. “Combining, therefore, techno-scientific, economic and moral progress in and through AI research and systems promises to lead to a new scale of human progress.”
