The art world is seeing a massive shift from traditional objects to immersive, multi-sensory experiences. In this DLD26 session moderated by Marc Spiegler, panelists Sakurako Naka (teamLab), Florian Haller (Serviceplan) and Lars Hinrichs, founder of the new UBS Digital Art Museum, discuss what it means when art becomes a space you step into.
A pioneer of this trend is teamLab, a diverse collective of specialists – including engineers, programmers, mathematicians, and architects – who collaborate on building living environments. An early work, Borderless, shows how “artworks may start in one room, then move out of that room, and they will interact and mingle with each other”, Sakurako Naka explains. “They influence each other and they’re also influenced by the people and their presence and behaviors in that space.”
Captivated by teamLab’s vision, tech entrepreneur Lars Hinrichs decided to bring this monumental experience to Europe with the UBS Digital Art Museum in Hamburg. Privately financed, the museum aims to bridge the gap between our screen-heavy digital lives and real-world physical adventures, he explains. “Everybody who goes to this museum comes out with a smile.”
Florian Haller introduces the latest edition of Serviceplan’s magazine TWELVE, which was designed in collaboration with teamLab. “It’s a collective of artists and that fits obviously the way how we work”, he says. “It combines many different things and creates something completely new out of it.”
