Most people using the Internet don’t own their own content – they are, in effect, “digital serfs”, as Animoca Brands chairman Yat Siu puts it in his DLD26 conversation with media consultant Marcel Reichart.
Blockchain and tokenization hold the key to reversing this trend and establishing true digital property rights, Siu argues. The value that users currently create for tech platforms “ought to be shared by the users in the community”, he says. “That is what the original Internet was supposed to be like, where we had more decentralized information.”
Crypto and tokenization are “the asset class of the youth”, Siu emphasizes. In South Korea, for example, “60% of the youth under the age of 30 exclusively trade crypto. They don’t even bother with the stock market.”
Siu also highlights tokenization’s role in the AI economy: while AI agents cannot pass traditional banking regulations to open accounts, they can easily hold digital wallets to trade and purchase compute power 24/7, he notes.
