In his brief but thoughtful DLD Future Hub talk, philosopher Benjamin Rathgeber, co-director of the Center for Responsible AI Technologies (CReAITech), explains how metaphors such as the “black box” influence the way we think and feel about AI.
“When we think about AI, it’s an incredible strong tool, but in the end, we don’t know what we are doing”, Rathgeber notes, “because these tools are so complex that we don’t understand them anymore.”
This explains both the mystery and fear surrounding AI, he argues. One of Rathgeber’s key points is the desire to open the black box of AI, transforming it into a “white box” through greater transparency and understanding.
