Mozilla’s Chief Technology Officer, Raffi Krikorian, argues that we’re making a critical mistake by surrendering to a handful of tech giants. In his DLD26 conversation with Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, Krikorian warns that current AI systems serve the interests of their creators, not our own.
“When you go to ChatGPT and ask it for an answer to a question”, he says, “whose incentives were encoded in that response?” For a user, there’s no way know, Krikorian argues – making chatbots an inferior choice to traditional search engines.
“You feel like Google search was unpolluted in that sense”, he says. “I think we all underestimated how much having 10 blue links on the screen did for us.”
In general, users of today’s AI systems should ask themselves, “are we owners or are we renters in the way that intelligence is working?”, Krikorian suggests. Right now, as we use “these systems that are powered by someone else, we’re renting our intelligence.”
