Healthcare should be seen as critical infrastructure, meaning resilience starts with rethinking hospital buildings, energy use, security, and daily operations, Dr. Janina Beilner, Senior Vice President of Healthcare at Siemens, argues in her DLD Health talk.
Geopolitical tensions and demographic shifts require society to “think differently of healthcare compared to how we thought about it maybe ten years ago”, she says. This should begin with upgrading aging building, which are often “in really desolate situations.”
Hospitals should be modern but also offer flexibility in daily use, Beilner advises. “In Switzerland, we have built the hospital today for tomorrow”, she says, which has many single rooms that are “easily refittable for three to four patients in the future.”
Beilner also shows how AI and connected systems can offer real-time location services, in-house navigation, and track wheelchairs or infusion pumps. At the same time, securing IT services is of utmost important: “The healthcare industryis the most hacked industry globally”, she warns. “Health data, but also scientific data, is something people are paying for.”
