In this DLD talk you’ll hear about a new AI tool that can identify bird species by sound. Bioacoustics researcher Stefan Kahl is the Lead for the BirdNET project within the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at Cornell University.
BirdNET can recognize over 6,000 bird species accurately. It allows automatic identification on a large scale for the first time.
“You get a continuous data collection, it has very low disturbance to species, and you can actually monitor in very challenging terrains because you only have to go there once”, Kahl explains.
Birds are indicators for ecosystem health, he continues, “because they’re very sensitive to environmental changes and they rapidly respond because of their rapid breeding cycles.”
Watch the video for details about this groundbreaking biodiversity project. Kahl is introduced by Auguste von Bayern, Chair of the Förderkreis Biotopia, which aims to build a world-class Life Sciences museum in Munich.
