AI is redefining healthcare by enabling innovation at a level previously unimaginable. Aldo Faisal (Imperial College London, University of Bayreuth) explains that the goal is to move to systems that don’t just help diagnose, but actively treat patients.
“Data saves lives”, Faisal points out – this principle has guided advancements from the 19th-century to today’s cutting-edge AI systems. In Wales, Faisal’s team developed an AI system that uses only administrative healthcare records – such as doctors’ visits and pharmacy records – to predict “with over 80% accuracy if you have to go unexpectedly to hospital in the next three months”, Faisal says.
In another field test, Faisal and his team collaborated with Tesco, a supermarket chain, to analyze a possible connection between people’s shopping and their health. “To our surprise”, he says, “we found a signal that told us whether a woman would develop ovarian cancer that was eight months earlier detectable than the actual diagnosis they received from the hospital.”
