Find out about the transformative power of accessible, tuition-free online education in this DLD25 conversation between Claudia Romo Edelman, founder of the We Are All Human Foundation, and Shai Reshef, President of University of the People (UoPeople).
The discussion highlights the university’s journey since its launch at DLD in 2009 and its ambitious goal of reaching one million students worldwide. Currently, the university counts over 153,000 students, including refugees, undocumented individuals, and underserved populations worldwide.
“We’re building a model to show that higher education can be accessible and affordable to all with the right quality”, Reshef states, highlighting the university’s commitment to leaving no one behind.
Artificial intelligence will be crucial to fulfilling the university’s mission, Reshef says. “We do not believe that we can reach million students without AI.”
One reason is the non-profit nature of UoPeople. “We have 47,000 volunteers”, Reshef notes, adding that AI can help with tasks like answering frequently asked questions and identifying students at risk. The online university also teaches its students how to use AI ethically and effectively, preparing them for the future workforce.
