Widely known as weight-loss drugs, GLP‑1s and related peptides can also be used to treat mental‑health conditions by targeting the underlying biology of anxiety, depression, burnout and ADHD, this DLD Health conversation between Nikita Tsimmer (Fountain Health) and Anne Philippi (The New Health Club) shows.
Traditional psychiatry often ignores metabolic factors such as insulin resistance or hormone dysregulation, Tsimmer notes. “in the US, there is a huge focus on symptom management”, he says, “and how do we manage those symptoms through medication?”
Fountain Health begins every patient’s care with comprehensive lab work, he emphasizes, “and that becomes the foundation on which we build the care plan. We believe that mental health care has to be individualized.”
This effort prompted Tsimmer’s team to take a closer look at the beneficial effects of peptides. “As we began to explore the mind body connection, that’s what led us to use a range of interventions, including GLP-1s”, he explains. “And several patients reported reduced cravings from alcohol, or maybe their mind had quieted down.”
