“Decision making is the steering wheel for our lives”, Cassie Kozyrkov observes in her DLD24 conversation with Axios reporter Ina Fried. Kozyrkov was Google’s first Chief Decision Scientist before founding her own company, Data Scientific, in 2023.
Kozyrkov explains that decision science is about transforming information into better action.
But data alone is not the answer, she emphasizes – our decisions are what truly affect the world. Incomplete or biased data can still be useful for decision making, but we must recognize its limitations and be careful about the assumptions we make when using it.
She also addresses confirmation bias, the quality of datasets and how intuition and experience can aid human decision making.
Kozyrkov argues that society should take decision skills more seriously and train people to become better decision makers.
