For investors who want to venture beyond Wall Street there’s an exciting new asset class to discover: companies that power the next wave of space exploration. This DLD26 expert panel, moderated by Christian Teichmann (Hubert Burda Media), brings together Julie Böhning, CEO of PAVE Space, with Bulent Altan and Joram Voelklein, co-founders of Alpine Space Ventures, to discuss where the biggest opportunities lie.
“SpaceX, of course, made a lot of the news”, Altan says. “But it goes further than that. We have a whole space ecosystem that has its own supply chain” – including components, services, and payloads.
European competitors to SpaceX and Blue Origin, like ISAR Aerospace, can help the continent maintain technological sovereignty, Altan notes. This is important, he says, because relying on U.S. companies means that “you actually surrender quite a bit of your technology to the Americans when you have to tell them what kind of a satellite you’re carrying.”
Voelklein explains that the space sector already provides a rich variety of exit routes, ranging from private equity buyouts to investments from Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds. He also emphasizes the growing role of defense in market acquisitions, observing that no one “will be able to win a war if they don’t have upper hand also in space.”
Julie Böhning sees space as “an amazing candidate” to solve energy and resource constraints. “To me, orbit will really be a new continent”, she says, “a new industrial continent to solve the problems we do have on Earth.”
