A 130-year-old Bavarian mining company may seem an unlikely digital pioneer, but Dorfner has redefined what’s possible for traditional industry. In conversation with journalist Jennifer Schenker, CEO Mirko Mondan explains how to make radical transformation work.
Facing the limits of finite mineral resources and grappling with supply-chain disruptions, Mondan realized the company’s trove of proprietary data was one of Dorfner’s greatest assets.
One example are decades of detailed lab records of raw materials. “We are describing a sand with 50 attributes”, Mondan says. “And when you look at this from the point of AI, this is proprietary data no one else has in the world.”
To digitize this legacy data, Dorfner partnered with an external AI specialist and gained valuable insights for its processes. “We found out very, very fast that we don’t need so much material in a liter of paint”, Mondan recalls, adding that the company now uses 60% less mineral deposits.
