A billion people turn to Google Search every day with questions about their health or wellness – and increasingly they’re trusting AI, not just their doctors, to make sense of the answers, as Dr. Susan Thomas, Director of Google Health for Europe, explains in her DLD Health presentation.
AI summaries have particular relevance in health “because people want their information in a way that makes sense for them”, Thomas notes. “More than one trillion people have watched health videos on YouTube.” This shows how “Google is at that scale where perhaps we can drive billions of healthier lives”, she argues.
Thomas also illustrates Google’s research efforts, such as AlphaFold, which mapped over 200 million protein structures, and the emerging tools such as MedGemma and AMIE, an experimental AI agent that can hold clinical conversations with patients.
