Robots, Manners and Stress
Yes, robots can stressed out too – and when that happens things can get ugly, even dangerous for humans, as Cambridge University researchers Ross Anderson and Ilia Shumailov explain in their DLD Summer presentation.
As machines mix with humans more regularly, “we can expect tension and conflicts”, the scientists argue, and they make a detailed case for teaching machines some manners – for example by defining clear boundaries of what robots should be able to do.

Ilia Shumailov holds an MPhil in Advanced Computer Science from the University of Cambridge and is working on a PhD in Computer Science under the supervision of Prof. Ross Anderson. Ilia has worked on a number of projects spanning the fields of machine learning, cybercrime analysis and signal processing.

Ross Anderson is Professor of Security Engineering at Cambridge and Edinburgh universities. He was a founder of the discipline of security economics, and leads the Cambridge Cybercrime Centre. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering, as well as a winner of the Lovelace Medal – the UK's top award in computing.
