EU Commissioner Roberto Viola discusses Europe’s approach to regulating artificial intelligence while still encouraging innovation.
Viola, Director General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, notes that Europe is taking concrete steps to address global risks from AI through new laws and funding for research.
“People say, ‘You should not regulate AI’”, he notes. “Others say it’s going to be the end of the world, it’s going to be a mess.”
In this ongoing debate “it’s a fact that Europe is ahead of the rest of the world in counteracting this risk”, Viola argues.
He also shares insights about the EU AI Act, which focuses on risk management and empowering stakeholders to address issues, arguing that good regulation can result in good innovation. In addition, Viola highlights the potential of AI in areas like climate change, medicine and agriculture.
