Dr. Stella Clarke, an innovator at BMW, developed the world’s first color-changing car – a feat which got her nominated for World Car Person of the Year in 2023.
In conversation with Alex Schill (Serviceplan), Dr. Clarke explains how the groundbreaking technology works and why color-customization has both functional and emotional value.
“The inspiration for all of this was the e-reader and knowing that within the e-reader there was a layer that changes its colors”, Dr. Clarke says. BMW’s IX Flow uses E Ink panels to change its color and can even display complex art patterns.
In a short video, you’ll also see how the technology allows users to customize their car’s exterior color. And Dr. Clarke shares insights on what it takes to realize creative ideas inside a large corporation.
